Renowned for its Duomo di Milano, the largest cathedral in the world, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a grandiose shopping arcade, the impressive Piazza del Duomo was designed by Giuseppe Mengoni and built in the mid nineteenth century. Named after its architect, the handsome Palazzo Mengoni stands alongside the Galleria facing the Duomo and later became the Hotel Grand Duomo, no doubt owing to its prime location.
Once fashionable and even drawing celebrities including The Beatles, the hotel had become tired and outdated. Amongst many issues were a dismal arrival experience, tortuous fire escapes, inefficient energy use and split levels limiting wheelchair access. Heavy passing footfall on the Piazza, a voluminous central lightwell and stunning rooftop views of the Duomo had not been exploited. A global hotel chain spotted an opportunity for transformation into a luxury destination.
The unrealised proposal converts the lightwell into a dramatic atrium with vaulted glass roof subtly referencing the Galleria, simultaneously improving guest experience and energy efficiency. Double sided ‘wall climber’ lifts are inserted within, cleverly accessing all upper levels. Reception is shifted under the atrium, freeing up space on the Piazza for lucrative retail. Fire safety is improved by introducing a new escape stair within a peripheral lightwell. The business centre and conference rooms are expanded, targeting Milan’s thriving commercial sectors. Up on the roof, a new setback structure houses 14 penthouse suites, sky bar and restaurant spilling out onto a shaded terrace with memorable views of the Duomo and its Piazza.

“It is such a background of international projects, significant client-led relationships and detailed experience of the complex regulations governing the construction of such a wide range of building types that makes Julian Dickens a rare architect.”
